It was a difficult afternoon for Uruguay, which was frustrated by the Asian side and ended up drawing 0-0.

But it was an incident midway through the second period that got everyone talking.

Cheering on his team from the touchline, Alonso got more than he bargained for when Woo-Young Jung headed the ball straight into his face from close range.

Despite the potentially painful moment, the 47-year-old responded with a minimum of fuss.

But fans on Twitter felt his pain.

A fan joked: “Diego Alonso received a blow to the face and pretended that it did not happen”

Another said: “Ouch!”

A third said: “He will have a black eye when he gets up in the morning.”

A fourth wasn’t as sympathetic, saying: “Good. Some strange decisions with the line-up and subs.”

Uruguay returns to action against Portugal in their next Group H match on Monday.
