US media: Biden will nominate Chinese American Dai Qi as trade representative-RTHK

American media reported that President-elect Biden plans to nominate Katherine Tai, a Chinese-American, the current chief trade attorney on the Ways and Means Committee of the House of Representatives, as the U.S. Trade Representative. If implemented, he will become the first Chinese cabinet member of Biden’s cabinet. Reuters quoted sources expecting that Biden will officially announce Dai Qi’s nomination later this week. 45-year-old Dai Qi graduated from Yale University and Harvard Law School. He speaks fluent Mandarin. He taught English at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou for two years and served as the General Counsel of the Office of the United States Trade Representative, responsible for handling Chinese trade issues. “The Wall Street Journal” reported that Dai Qi is proficient in China issues and has mature diplomatic skills. The nomination will show that Biden intends to quickly resolve outstanding trade issues while cooperating closely with allies to cope with China’s economic competition.
