Manila, Philippines – The University of Santo Tomas has found a new king tiger in its den.

Nick Cabanero fired a career-high 33 points, including an insurance basket, with 41.6 seconds to propel the Growling Tigers to a 69-60 victory at the start of the UAAP Season 85 men’s basketball tournament on Saturday.

Notwithstanding the close of the shot clock, Cabanero confidently swung the step-back jumper that created the five-point separation needed in the closing seconds for the Tigers to kick off the season with a promising approach.

The Falcons tried to revive their dwindling chances, but thwarted three attempts from afar, allowing the Tigers to seal Adamson’s fall at the charity strip.
Christian Manatee and Paul Manalung split their free throws as the Falcons went into a frenzied frenzy, before Cabanero won with two of his freebies.

The 6-foot-2 Cabanero, who came into the role of leader after the absence of UST’s key players, made 13 for 18 off the field after going into a scoring tear with 17 points in the first half.

Lenda Douanga and Joshua Yarrow had 13 points for the Falcons, who chased Cabanero and the Tigers eventually closed Jerome Lastimosa on three, 60-63 with a minute to spare.
