MANILA, Philippines — Carl Tamayo calmly buried two game-cleaning free throws in the final seconds as the University of the Philippines opened its title-retention bid in the UAAP season with a 72-69 win over La Salle on Saturday night. 85 Men’s Basketball Tournament.

Tamayo’s freebies with four ticks completed the Fighting Maroons climb with a hole that commemorates his Green Archer victory in last season’s Final Four.

Ivan Neale has a narrow window of opportunity to turn the tide, but the slippery guard stumbled over the arc between a phalanx of UP’s defenders and failed to launch a desperation three.

Neale first pulled off the archers with a three within one and placed Tamayo on the charity bar on the ensuing play.

Tamayo had 18 points and 19 rebounds, while Terence Fortia added 15 points for the UAAP defending champions, who were behind double-digits at one point in the second half.

“I think we have to be more organized in our successful games. This is our first game, but there is no reason for us to play in such a situation,” said UP head coach Goldwyn Monteverde.

Alex Winston led the archers with 27 points, while Neale failed to live up to his estimate that the archers were the team to beat this season by contributing nine points.
