A one-time Liverpool player has just secured a relatively big transfer.
Well, another one.
Liverpool released Georginio Wijnaldum a little over 12 months ago after the Netherlands international failed to agree a new contract with the Reds.
By virtue of the fact that Jurgen Klopp’s side won two trophies last season – and almost won four – you could argue that the German manager and his players didn’t miss Wijnaldum all that much.
The former Newcastle United midfielder joined Paris Saint-Germain on a Bosman but struggled in a major way under Mauricio Pochettino last term.
But he has just secured another big move.
Wijnaldum has signed for Jose Mourinho’s Roma on a season-long loan arrangement.
Mourinho might be a declining force relative to what he used to be in management, but he remains a ‘special’ coach and one who could bring about the return of the same Wijnaldum that Klopp unlocked at Liverpool throughout a five-year stint on Merseyside.
You could argue that Klopp still hasn’t replaced the 31-year-old.
None of their three signings this summer have been central midfielders and it could actually cost the Reds a little.
That’s because Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is sidelined with injury once again, as is Curtis Jones and Naby Keita, well nobody would be backing the Guinea international to stay fit all season long.
Nobody is saying that Liverpool should’ve re-signed Wijnaldum, but if he recaptures his best form in Italy then it’ll serve as a reminder that Klopp never truly replaced the player.
It didn’t do much damage last season, but it could this time around.
